When Don Heck was good!

By the time John Buscema advocated for Don Heck at the Marvel offices, most likely in the 70s, Heck was known as a 'hack' by many editors and fans. If you believe this then you should know that Don Heck was more innovative and careful with his work in the 50s.

Attached is one of his covers from the 50s ala the Al Williamson look.

John Buscema was not a hack. He was a classically trained and dedicated artist. Buscema would spend several hours every night drawing for himself on the back pages of his commercial comic book pages.

Soltero edited an entire book, John Buscema a Life in Sketches, on these type of sketches.

The images drawn by Buscema were often better drawn than the camera ready art on the front.
