Steven Spielberg has signed to produce and most likely direct the BlackHawk movie.
Those WW2 characters were created by Will Eisner, Bob Powell, and Chuck Cuidera, but made most popular by the great art of Reed Crandall. Crandall's work was so well respected that he was later hired by the William Gaines (publisher of MAD), and created a body of well illustrated work for EC.
Blackhawk was first published in 1941 but DC brought it back several times in the 70s-90s. The first series ended in 1956.
Of course a lot of the imagery is filled with stereotypical stories and art. Spielberg will, hopefully, avoid some of that but who knows. Indiana Jones had its fair share of stereotype.
