The Force Awakens was too close to the original first movie from 70s, and the template was nearly identical--not as interesting for those seasoned to the franchise.
The Last Jedi has many allusions to the other original first three movies but manages to make it it own movie/story.
Not sure if you folks noticed but there is even an allusion to Leia's powerful message where she tells Han she loves him. In this one Rey tells Chewbaca to give Finn a message if she does not she him first-- the Wookie gives her a suggested message in Wookie language and she says that is good--it is not said but understood from those who caught it.
The last Jedi features a diverse cast, including Benicio del Toro. In Guardians of the Galaxy he was the collector and (spoiler alert) he is the code breaker (if not the master code breaker).
